How to clean bearings
just somthing i have been asked about
pic 1 Remove wheel if like me you are using Twisters let all the pressure out the tire first to avoide damage when removing also set a side small washers and nuts so you dont misplace them, give these a good wash. To take out bearing use the tip of a screwdriver and lever the bearing out or lever out with axel
pic 2 remove the rubber seal using the tip of a knife set the seals aside you will need to clean these to
pic 3 note to separate Twisters gently ease the tire from rim as it can stick with the muck once free then untwist as in pic keep all the parts togeter so you dont misplace anything dont need to separate if you are just cleaning the bearings
pic 4 after giving everything a good clean i used white spirit on bearings and just soapsuds on wheels to clean until you can see the actual ball bearings see # 1
if there is any ballbearings missing or damage then replace that bearing
when compleatly dry apply a good water repelent grease see # 2 fill compleatly
replace cleaned rubber seals see #3 now just put it all back together dont forget washers on each side of bearings so you can tighten nuts up and wheel can spin free and spacers inside the wheel if you have then
thats it just saved you wheels
hope this is helpfull to you
chris
to remove the bearings from the wheel use the end of the truck axel (its the perfect size) but be careful.
no need to take yer hubs apart unless they dirty and need a clean too, the bearings will still pop out using your truck axel
start cleaning your bearings with wd40 before removing seals
use the tip of a stanley blade to remove the seal, again be very careful. dont wanna bend em ;) remember to clean the seals also
set fire to the white spirit (or wd40 if you have none) to completly dry your bearing out before applying grease, wipe away soot if any.
wd40 is a very good degreaser, but dont use it to make your bearings good or as an alternative to what chris has mentioned cos it will kill em
maybe update yer guide chris, my middle name is bearings ;)
like the setting fire bit love health and saftey yer i use the truck axel as well easyer but could not think how to explain
also when you take out bearings you often have spacers between the bearings inside the wheels dont forget to replace these after cleaning note that Twisters dont need these
as Gapsta says wd40 no good as a lube it will strip out any grease from your bearing and make them worse in the long run
bearing sizes you get different sizes for different axels and wheel hubs
6001-2RS - 12mm Axel (Channel Truck springs in it ) board. to 28mm hubs most modern hubs use this size Twisters ect
R6-RS - Skate Truck 10mm Axle Boards 22mm hub size (older scrub ect use these )
Primo reducer - 10mm Axle Standard Hub to 28mm hubs twisters ect
you can get some cool spacers to fit a 12mm (6001-2rs) to a skate truck from trampa but the reducer bearings work just as well
look at your bearings to see what they say before ordering note that reducer bearings may be called 6001 -2rs reducers so if in doubt ask
ak bearings cheap for the stainless ones
http://www.akbearings.co.uk/prodtype.asp?strParents=102&CAT_ID=107&numRecordPosition=1
its good to note that running bearings full of sand or no grease will make them heat up and they can melt or damage your hubs if you just use wd40 it will wreck them
i love bearings me
cool and thanks for the help gapsta
gapsta whats the score on stainless steel bearings worth the extra money on sandy beaches 30 quid tho thats 3 sets of normal bearings what do you use in skate boards
also whats abec 1 2 3 4 5 whats the difference quality on the numbers
thanks gapsta in advance
they probs are great on non sandy beaches ;)
ive not used stainless bearings yet so cant comment mate cant imagine them being that much better tbh, but worth a try. seems to cost me £30 a year in normal bearings
salt water is just a bugger anyways
abec rating is the speed/temprature a bearing can spin upto i.e. abec5 can spin to 5000rpm abec9 to 9000rpm before breaking down, its really irrelevant when it comes to landboarding unless your are all about speed runs and even then the difference is very small.
abec ratings are more a skate thing where speed is more important. but good bearings are good bearings like anything else yet on a beach they'll all fail quite quickly.
if your after skate bearings i recommend 'bones reds' 16 quid a pack but worth it
all bearings need spacers when assembled, it holds the bearings in line correctly so you are spinning on the bearings and not the axel. hence why they are called bearings :)
if your current spacers dont tighten to the inner ring of the bearings you need bigger spacers, you also should have a washer on the outside of each wheel to make this work correctly. im not sure my spacers connect properly, but its better to have em than not have em as for one its takes the strain off your expensive wheels.
theres are a shit ton of reasons for having spacers and this can of worms is big, but bottom line is spacers are definetly needed
dont let anyone tell you any different about spacers its law you need em! no matter what wheels or tyres or underpants
I used stainless MBS stainless steel bearings in the past as a natural replacement for the the one's i received complete with the board. Its a lot more difficult to remove the casing as its metal therefore non (or less?) user serviceable. If it is possible to get into the bearings I would love to know how. As mentioned above £30 as shot is a too much to pay. I recon i'll probably go for the normal bearings in future.
Rule No. 2
When your wheels dont turn cos you didnt wash your board down, use WD40 to get a sesh in, worked for me this past 3 times lol
Then grease em as aforementioned, i'm lazy and have a bearing subscription with a well known kite shop.
But they never sent me the stickers i asked for so aint getting a mention
Ted @ Trampa always throws me a set in but i am a Trampa pimp ;)
makes a lovely grating sound too!!! lol
that tank track sound is sooo soothing
but will melt twistars due to the heat build up but good quick fix but get em greesed like monkey boy
